A Beginner's Guide to UTV Camping

If you just bought your first UTV or are thinking about taking your off-road vehicle camping for the first time, it can seem like a daunting task to know where to start. UTV camping opens up a whole new world of outdoor recreation, allowing you to ride scenic trails right from your campsite. Follow this beginner's guide for your first UTV camping adventure at Brimstone Acres Campground.

Local Trail Systems

One of the best parts of UTV camping at Brimstone Acres is the access to incredible trail systems right from camp. Two major systems are available to explore:

North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area - This nearly 70,000-acre area managed by the TWRA features over 100 miles of exciting, challenging trails perfect for UTVs. Wind through dense forests and past rock outcroppings as you ride.

Rocky Top ATV Trails - This system contains over 100 miles of UTV/ATV trails ranging from beginner to difficult. Test your skills on the breakaway trails, rock gardens, and creek crossings. Connects to Brimstone Acres.

Packing for UTV Camping

While packing for UTV camping is similar to regular tent camping, there are a few key items to remember:

  • UTV accessories - Pack extra fuel or oil, tools for basic repairs, tow straps, and a first aid kit tailored to UTV needs.

  • Camp kitchen setup - Bring along camp tables, cooking equipment, and UTV-powered refrigerators/freezers to create a full kitchen.

  • Sleeping arrangements - Consider camping in your UTV or ATV by adding accessories like tents, cots, and bedding. Or bring a regular tent and sleeping bags.

  • Cold weather gear - If camping in spring or fall, pack warm layers, gloves, and face coverings to stay comfortable on chilly rides.

Choosing the Right Campsite

Brimstone Acres offers over 10 acres of UTV-friendly campsites. Look for these features when picking your spot:

  • Pull-through sites - Make it easy to park your UTV near your tent/camper.

  • Space and terrain - Pick a level, spacious site with room to unload your vehicle and gear.

  • Trail access - Sites near trailheads or the on-site trails allow you to ride right from camp.

Campground Etiquette

Following basic trail etiquette and being respectful of other campers is key for an enjoyable UTV camping trip:

  • Obey trail and campground speed limits. Only drive UTVs in designated areas.

  • Keep noise levels low especially early/late hours when in camp.

  • Stay on marked trails and be cautious of hikers or cyclists.

  • Avoid riding in groups larger than 4-6 to prevent trail damage.

  • Leave no trace and pack out all trash and belongings.

With access to amazing trail systems, spacious campsites, and amenities, Brimstone Acres Campground is the perfect destination for your first UTV camping trip. This beginner's guide covers the basics - now get out there and start making memories riding the Tennessee trails.
